Paying for Veneers: Part 1
Do you have misshapen, asymmetrical, stained, or chipped teeth? Are you looking for a way to rapidly transform your smile without needing multiple, intensive procedures? Dental veneers could be the perfect solution. Your dentist can apply thin sheets of porcelain to the visible sides of your teeth, creating a Hollywood smile in just two appointments! If you’re wondering how to pay for dental veneers, check out the options below.
Determining Whether Insurance Will Cover Veneers
It’s often thought that dental insurance will not cover cosmetic treatments, and this is usually the case. However, there are some situations in which dental insurance could potentially cover the cost of getting dental veneers. A treatment is considered to be restorative and medically necessary, rather than cosmetic and elective, if it is done for purposes other than aesthetics.
For example, if the teeth to be treated are affected by disease or tooth decay, or if they have been damaged by an accident or injury, then it’s possible dental veneers will be considered a restorative treatment. Check with your dentist to determine whether your veneers might be medically necessary. If this is the case, then your dentist may need to submit documentation to the insurance company to get your treatment covered.
Considering Whether You Can Use an FSA or HSA
A health savings account (HSA) or a flexible spending account (FSA) can also help you pay for dental veneers. These are tax-advantaged accounts that allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars for healthcare purposes. There are some differences between them, so if you’re thinking of opening one, you may wish to speak with an accountant.
Like dental insurance, neither HSA nor FSA accounts will cover the cost of dental veneers strictly for cosmetic purposes. However, these accounts will cover them if the veneers are medically necessary. If your dentist determines that veneers are medically necessary for you, he or she will likely need to submit a letter of medical necessity (LMN) in order to get them covered.
Dental insurance, FSA, and HSA accounts aren’t the only means of paying for dental veneers.
